10% savings = big financial and educational gains
21 August 2012
Schools across England are paying £500m per year for agency supply
staff, often at varying rates, with differing contractual
obligations and sometimes without complying with procurement
regulations. The Schools Buying Club is currently working with a
group of 40 schools to create a compliant framework that aims to
reduce their current spend of £900k per annum by around 10% (£90k)
and, at the same time, harmonise the terms and conditions they sign
up to (including temp to perm contracts).
Across the country this 10% saving would result in savings of £50m, for non academy primary, special and secondary schools. Imagine the impact £50m could have on our schools.
Whilst national frameworks do exist, they often do not include local suppliers who provide a significant proportion of schools' supply needs. What's more, the prices negotiated via the national frameworks tend to be "catch-all" arrangements that fail to consider local conditions and market rates. This means that schools often pay as much, if not more, through a national framework as they would dealing directly with a local agency.
